Letter 15 : My Winter Vacation

Dear Tim,

How are you? It has been a long time I didn't write you letters. The winter vacation was over, all the students went back to school, so do I.

About my winter vacation, I really had a good time during that period. It is sad that our winter vacation is only one month long, that’s too short for me.
By the way, I wonder how long are the winter breaks in Arizona?
During the vacation, first I went to an amusement park in Hsinchu with my friends from the church we go to. And unfortunately, we went there at the coldest time of winter. The temperature was only 7 degrees Celsius. It was freezing cold and it was even raining! But, nothing can stop me from having fun in an amusement park! First, we rode teacups, you know that there is a metal disk in the middle of the cup, and if you want the cup spins faster, you can spin that disk. So, my brother and I span it crazily, and the cup span faster and faster. Then, we rode a roller coaster which its seats were all wet, and of course, rain dropped on our faces while riding on it. Now, it comes my favorite one, the drop tower, I think it was really exciting while falling from about 42 meters high. The scene was cool that all the amusement rides became small and the clouds were under our feet.
I was happy with this trip, and I wish we can go there again on a sunny day.
I can't find any photos of me, I don't know why...

Merry-go-round.
I'm curious about how does merry-go-round's name come from?

My friends in a cup, or strictly speaking, in a barrel.

Best regards, Cathy.

  1. Dear Cathy,
Welcome back! A month long winter break is about the longest that I've ever heard of for high school. In Arizona, they're about two week.s. University students usually get about a month, so that's something that you can look forward to.
You went to an amusement park on the coldest day of the year? Well, you probably didn't have to worry about the crowds.
A "merry-go-round" is more properly called a "carousel", from a French or Italian word. In English, it's one of those names that is self-descriptive. It goes around, and makes people merry (cheerful). Now, riding a roller coaster in the rain does sound like fun, but I'm not so sure about the drop tower.

    How are the cats?

    Tim
