Letter 20: Detention & Wetlands in Taiwan

Dear Tim,
I knew that you might be a little nervous about writing our history, 228 incident is still be a sensitive problem in Taiwan now, but some people are trying to teach the children about Taiwan more. I'm going to tell you a popular computer game which released recently named 返校 Detention, which was made by Taiwanese. (Maybe you have already known.) Its setting is the period of the white terror in Taiwan. In addition to its own plots, it also mentions the restrictions during that age. For example: there were some books which you couldn't read, because the government said that there were anti-government thoughts or something bad in those books. And then, if you were caught reading these books, the government would sentence you to death or put you in the jail. Anyway, this was very unfair and ridiculous. I think this is a nice game that it is not only an entertainment, also it tells us the history of Taiwan.
By the way, there are many marshes (or wetlands, I don't know how to call them.) in Taiwan, too. I had only visited one of them before, which is Guandu. And the last time I visited there was about three or four years ago. So, the only thing I remember is the birds, there were a lot of birds there. And there would be some migratory birds which came to there during the winter. Well, I don't really love nature so much, so this was a little boring to me then. But to hold a binoculars, watching the birds  moving were interesting enough for a child (me).
I will try to visit T Time and leave comments more!
Best regards, Cathy

  1. Dear Cathy,
Some of your classmates have mentioned "Detention' before, and it sounds like an interesting way to learn a little about Taiwanese history. I know that the whole 1945-1992 period of Taiwan history is very sensitive, and writers have to be careful with in. That could easily be somebody's parent or grandparent that I could be writing about.
i thought that there would be plenty of wetlands in Taiwan, and that you would have many of the same or similar birds. You might want to just go down to the park with a bag of popcorn, sit on a bench, and see if any bird beside pigeons show up. The popcorn is for you and the birds.

    Tim
