Letter 11 : About The Catholic Ritual

Dear Tim,

Answers...
2. The Catholic calendar is called the "liturgical" calendar that is filled with saints days, feast days, holy days of obligation and liturgical seasons.
3. Advent is a period before Christmas which last for four weeks. Its purpose is to get people into the Christmas season slowly and gradually.

1. A "chili" means any one of different types of pepper in Mexico, and it means a dish in US.
2. "Masa" is corn flour. Masa is a much finer grind, but corn meal is coarser.

It's true that you said in the newsletter no. 14 about the Catholic calendar. I know that because I would experience the calendar every year. I think the Catholic calendar is pretty strict, it told us what time should celebrate or pray, and we have to follow the same rule every year. That's a little boring for me actually. But its purpose is to remind us what Jesus had gone through for fear that we forget him, so I think it quite necessary for people.
And because I'm an altar server, so I could see what priests choose to wear before mass. Just like you said, the priests would wear purple vestments during Advent seasons, and they would wear green vestments during Ordinary Time. Also, the table towel of the altar would be changed into the same color.

Best regards, Cathy.

  1. Dear Cathy,
I didn't know that you were Catholic. Do you know why the priest wears rose colored vestments on the 3rd Sunday of Advent? I really don't remember.
The local bishop can sometimes "suspend" some of these rules. In many places in the US with a large Irish population, the priest will wear green on the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day (March 17th). It's always during Lent, so the color is supposed to be purple.

    Tim
